History of Sotogrande
In 1962, Freddy Melian, a Filipino employee of the Ayala Corporation in the Philippines, received a complimentary ticket from Swissair to Spain as a frequent flier. The Ayala Corporation was responsible for numerous high-end housing developments, including Forbes Park.
At the behest of Joseph McMicking, the President of Ayala, Melian set out on a mission to find the perfect spot along the Mediterranean coast for an exclusive resort. The requirements were straightforward: a kilometer-long beach, plentiful water sources, and close proximity to an airport.
Melian embarked on a motorcycle journey that took him along the entire Spanish Mediterranean coast. After thorough exploration, he eventually discovered a location that met all the criteria. Upon his return to Makati, he presented his findings to McMicking and his nephews, Jaime and Enrique Zobel.
The property that piqued their interest was Finca Paniagua in San Roque, strategically located near Gibraltar. With the approval of the Spanish authorities for development, the envisioned result was named Sotogrande.
